Delegates at the latest Black Country Provider Collaborative (BCPC) clinical summit were told that acute providers must work more closely with Primary Care to alleviate service pressures – and represent “those without a voice”. More than 140 delegates at the seventh BCPC clinical summit at GTG West Midlands in Wednesfield heard keynote speaker Dr Ryan Hobson, Chair of Black Country Primary Care Collaborative, warn that growing challenges were putting added strain on Primary Care.

Sir David Nicholson used his first opportunity since taking over as joint Chair of all four Black Country NHS Trusts to highlight how innovation can start to address health inequities across the region. The first robotic-assisted operation was performed at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust’s City Hospital on 14 April, while Dudley’s Russells Hall Hospital hosted its first robotic procedure – a kidney removal – in March 2023.

Colleagues from the four local Trusts – Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton – joined forces to explain how they are all working together to deliver better, faster and safer care.

Work across the Black Country Provider Collaborative continues to gather momentum and I am pleased to announce that the Provider Collaborative Board has recently approved two business cases. We can now move forward with plans to purchase more surgical robots in the area and launch our plans for Mohs Surgery (a type of skin cancer service that currently is not available in the Black Country) both of which strengthen the range of service provision within the Black Country.

This edition has an in-depth focus on Community Diagnostic Centres and all the work taking place to provide the best care in the most suitable locations. We also have a round-up of what was discussed at the orthopaedics workshop. It was fascinating to attend the workshop and hear about the ideas from colleagues about what improvements could be made to achieve better outcomes for our patients. The Black Country Provider Collaborative held a very successful fourth clinical summit at the Hawthorns Stadium in March where 160 clinicians, service leaders from the four Trusts – Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton – together with some primary care colleagues, collaborated on how to deliver care and redesign services across the patch. The Provider Collaborative is joint working at its best and there was a lot of energy in the room as leaders from many specialties rose to the challenge of making services better, faster, and safer while improving work life balance for all our staff.
